Detaching a license

Release 1.01 - ...

When your organization have been supplied with a network license which also allows detaching (Detachable is included in the key type description on the Hasp Keys page), this article describes which steps needs to be taken to detach a license.

When to detach

A detachable license is a network license with a specified number of allowed concurrent "uses", from which a license can be temporarily removed from the network pool on the host machine for attachment to a remote recipient machine.

This way, for a certain period of time, the license can be used locally (e.g. on a laptop) without the need to be connected to the host machine where the network license resides.

When the detached license expires, it will be automatically disabled on the recipient machine and restored to the host (unless the detached license is extended).

Configuration

Before you can start using a detachable license, first within the Admin Control Center of the network license host detaching must be enabled. Open the Configuration page and click the Detachable Licenses tab.

Admin Control Center - Detachable Licenses settings

Here you can enable the detaching of licenses, set the maximum detach duration and specify the number of reserved licenses and/or a percentage of the total number of licenses which must be reserved. (Reserved licenses can not be detached.)

Detach process

First you need to open the Admin Control Center on the host machine, where the network license has been installed, and open the Products page.

Detach - select product

Locate the product for which you want to detach a license and click the Detach (or Detache / Extend) button.

Detach - select recipient

From the Select Recipient Machine dropdown select your own machine. Specify an expiration date (the maximum detach duration can be configured on the Detachable Licenses tab of the Configuration page) and click the Detach button.

Detach - save H2R file

After a few seconds a page similar to the one shown above is displayed. Click the Save As button to save the so-called H2R file and transfer it to the recipient machine.

Then open the (local) Admin Control Center on your own machine / on the recipient machine and open the Update / Attach page.

Detach - Update / Attach page

Click the Browse button, select the H2R file you just saved and click the Apply File button.

Detach - finished

If the update was applied successfully, a page similar to the one above is displayed. Your local Hasp License Manager will now include an additional Hasp Key, with HASP SL Attached as type description.

Clicking the Features button will display the feature details for this product/license.

Detach - detached product details

Of course, the product will contain the same set of Features as the network license. However, access and concurrency restrictions will differ. A detached license does not provide network access and the maximum number of allowed concurrent uses is set to 1.
