List entries are taken from either the lookup list or the lookup query ctfp.

Multi-select

As of Smartsite 7.9, the checkboxlist also functions properly in combination with a lookuplist and multi-select mode. However, you will need to add the ctfp cms:ismultiselect to the contenttype field and set its value to true.

(The storage layer for the lookuplist needs this ctfp as indicator that multiple values are allowed. Therefore, you do not need to include this ctfp on a bit-pattern lookuplist, such as the FriendlyName Type field.)
